The popular watercooler debate has returned to our NYC workspace – is Spring or Fall a better season? It’s usually a 50/50 split between the post-hibernation excitement of Spring versus the crisp freshness of Fall. Fundamentally though, it’s a debate about which category of sunshine and fresh air is better. Employers take note, there is an important underlier in this debate. According to recent studies by HBR, the #1 way to keep employees happy is providing workspaces filled with natural light and access to the outdoors.
HR advisory firm Future Workplace called “The Employee Experience” reveals the reality is that employees crave something far more fundamental and essential to human needs. In a research poll of 1,614 North American employees, we found that access to natural light and views of the outdoors are the number one attribute of the workplace environment, outranking stalwarts like onsite cafeterias, fitness centers, and premium perks including on-site childcare.
Natural light’s far-reaching effects extend beyond the workday, which in turn, leads to greater productivity. A study conducted by the Department of Neurology at Northwestern University and the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois found that office workers with more natural light exposure slept longer, had better sleep quality, more physical activity, and rated a better quality of life than those with lower levels of natural light exposure.
Our NYC workspace is home to happy, productive members. While we like to credit our customer service for their happiness – sunny offices, and three outdoor terraces are really the essentials of their experience.
We designed Workville to enhance our natural assets. Workville’s corner location equates to a floorplan of predominately windowed offices. Because the neighboring buildings are recessed, offices feel airy and feature vista views of the city. Terraces are part of the shared workspace; members frequently walk outside to take calls, meetings and do some work.
Members’ credit our sunny, airy design as a large factor in their happiness and productivity. We’ll be adding another location soon, with sunny workspaces being the most important element in our design.
